Bali tourism office in corruption probe
DENPASAR – Indonesia’s media outlets have been running stories of allegations of corruption within the Bali Provincial Tourism Office.
Bali Update (www.balidiscovery.com) said that in response to a growing number of negative reports in the media, a special investigative team from the Bali provincial government visited the tourism office last week to audit expense claims in connection with Bali tourism promotion and overseas sales missions.
The head of the public relations department of the Bali provincial government said, “We are serious (in handling) these discoveries of corruption.â€
The investigation of the Bali Tourism Office was launched when an anonymous party sent data and chronologies of suspected irregularities involving attendances at international travel trade shows.
It is alleged that bills for booths taken out at these shows were invoiced twice – once to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Jakarta and again to the provincial tourism office in Bali.
The corruption reportedly took place from 2002 to 2008 and involved US$300,000.
