Bank Holiday flights were cancelled and diverted after Storm Katie battered large parts of England on Sunday and Monday.

Gatwick and Heathrow flights were diverted to other airports and dozens were cancelled as winds of up to 106mph were reported.

Attempted landings at Gatwick were described as ‘absolutely terrifying’ by passengers, with flights being diverted to Liverpool, Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands.

26 flights were cancelled and 23 diverted at Gatwick while Heathrow cancelled 61 flights and diverted another 20.

On Monday, 249 flights were delayed at Heathrow and 171 at Gatwick.

Emergency services were called to reports of a plane in difficulty on the runway at Stansted airport.

The QE2 Bridge at Dartford, the M48 Severn Crossing and the A38 Tamar Bridge in Cornwall were all shut for several hours due to the storm.

Cross-Channel and Isle of Wight ferry services were also subject to delays and temporary sailing restrictions were put in place at Dover.

High speed Condor Ferries between Poole and Guernsey, and between Guernsey and Jersey, were cancelled on safety grounds while the Sandbanks Ferry between Studland and Poole in Dorset was been suspended.
