Barrhead to install first external high street foreign exchange ATMs

The Dundee branch of Barrhead Travel is to become the location of the first external high street ATM for foreign exchange.

The Scottish chain has joined with Raphaels Bank, a member of the LINK ATM scheme, to install the ATM through the glass frontage of its agency in Dundee High Street.

“Whilst currency dispensing ATM’s are starting to appear at a number of airports, we believe this will be the first ever currency dispenser through the wall on a UK high street”, claimed Mike Smith, group director of marketing & strategy, Raphaels Bank.

Two ATMs are being installed at Barrhead Travel’s Dundee shop – one dispensing sterling and the other dispensing Euros. US dollars will also be available in the near future.

Barrhead Travel plans to install currency ATMs in all its branches when it gets planning permission.

“Our customers often ask about currency when they come into the branch to make travel arrangements” said Jason Patterson, Barrhead Travel.

“We are, therefore, very excited to be pioneering high street currency dispensing, working with Raphaels Bank. The ICE brand is already well known and recognised for foreign exchange bureaux.

“The key advantage of the new ATM is that travellers will be able to access Euros and US dollars whenever they want them, 24/7, rather than being limited to the usual opening hours of other high street outlets for foreign currency.”

Currency will be dispensed at the exchange rate that applies on the day and will be commission free.

Meanwhile, Barrhead is in the process of installing large plasma screens in all branch windows displaying footage of its in-house TV station showcasing its holidays, flights and cruises.

Customers will be able to take a virtual tour of cruise cabins and hotel/apartment accommodation and view beach areas live via web cam.
