Berlin airport strike extended until Wednesday
Workers at Berlin’s two airports have said they will extend their current walkout until Wednesday morning.
Service workers’ union Verdi called members out on the second strike in two days at 4am local time Monday morning.
The strike was due to finish at 5am local time on Tuesday, but the union has since issued a statement saying it plans to extend the walkout until early Wednesday morning.
Berlin’s mayor Michael Mueller said the strikes have cut off the city and damaged Germany’s image.
The revised strike comes as Airlines for Europe (A4E) is warning passengers face further flight cancellations over the coming months, causing chaos for the busy Easter and summer seasons.
A4E said 1,500 flights were cancelled during the five-day strike by staff at control centres in parts of France, which ended on Sunday.
A4E warned: "We see a risk not only for Easter, but also the summer holiday season."
Ryanair accused the European Commission and the French government of ‘standing idly by’ as unions held Europe to ransom.
A four-hour Italian air traffic control strike is set for Monday March 20. It will run from 12pm to 4pm, but flights either side of these times may be subject to delays or cancellations.
Ground staff at Berlin’s two airports will extend their strike until Wednesday morning, trade union Verdi said on Monday, stepping up action in a pay dispute that has already caused the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights since Friday.
Unions have called for a strike by cabin crews of the airline Air France from March 18-20.
