A rumored slowdown in perennially popular Las Vegas is exposed as myth by news the area is expected to attract 43 million visitors in 2011, compared with 37.2 million in 2007.

The numbers were announced by Rossi Ralenkotter, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The destination is also on track to have more than 165,000 hotel rooms by 2011. Currently, Las Vegas has 137,000 rooms, with 32,000 under construction. New construction abounds including:

  • The Encore Suites at Wynn Las Vegas, which will offer about 2,000 rooms when it opens in December.

  • The Fontainbleau, slated for a fall 2009 opening with about 3,800 rooms.

  • A new, 650-room tower at Caesars Palace, due for completion in mid-2009.

  • The MGM Mirage’s CityCenter, which will offer about 6,300 rooms in four properties when it opens in late 2009.

McCarran International Airport is undergoing an expansion to handle more incoming passengers.

In addition, the Las Vegas Convention Center will begin construction this year on an expansion and renovation that will add a new concourse connecting the three halls, a new meeting room concourse with 200,000 square feet of space, and more restaurants and other facilities, among other improvements. Completion is set for 2011.

Tourism officials are now working towards attracting more international visitors.
