Birmingham route scrapped before it even starts

A new transatlantic service due to take off from Birmingham Airport has been scrapped before it was even launched.

Latvian budget airline Primera Air said in July it would be introducig four flights a week from Birmingham to Boston from June 22.

But it has now abandoned its plans due to poor booking levels.

It is also scaling back the frequency of its Birmingham-Newark route, launching on May 18.

For the first month there will be daily flights but this will reduce to four times a week from June 23, it confirmed.

A three times a week service to Toronto, initially due to launch in May, has now been pushed back to June 23.

Primera Air said all passengers affected have been offered alternatives.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused to all those affected passengers and are working now to re-accommodate them as soon as possible," the airline said in a statement.

"We have to keep a strong focus only on those destinations delivering the best commercial results.

"This decision doesn’t change our plans to improve the flight network out of Birmingham where we see strong potential growth in transatlantic and holiday destination flights."
