Bloody Sunday at Suvarnabhumi?
BANGKOK: Bangkok’s Don Muang airport is now officially – Don Muang Airport.
Authorities say they have made the move to avoid confusion as flights begin to filter back to Don Muang from Bangkok’s new international airport at Suvarnabhumi,
It was though that by officially naming Don Muang, it would not be confused with Bangkok International Airport. The airport’s code also changes, from BKK to DMK.
But the confusion is likely to continue, starting this Sunday, when Thai Airways transfers the majority of domestic flights to Don Muang while it sorts out the capacity problems at Suvarnabhumi.
Thai Airways in Australia said 11 connecting flights to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket and Krabi would be operated from Suvarnabhumi while 30 non-connecting flights would depart from Don Muang.
It is feared there will not be enough connecting flights from Suvarnabhumi to satisfy demand – leaving passengers to find their way across the city in taxis or shuttle buses.
Three airlines will initially return their domestic services to Don Muang — Thai Airways, Nok Air (a subsidiary of Thai) and Orient Thai Airlines.
Airport of Thailand (Aot) acting president Kalaya Pakakron told the Bangkok Post it was expected that some five million passengers from the three airlines would use Don Muang and that all airport passenger facilities would be operating as before.
She said after Don Muang is reopened for six months, AoT would evaluate the airport and report its result to the Transport Ministry.
“The evaluation report would be a major factor to decide whether the international flights will operate from Don Muang in the future or not,” she said.
