Bmi plane comes off runway at Bristol Airport

An investigation is underway after a bmi plane came off the runway after landing at Bristol Airport, causing the suspension of flights.

The airline confirmed an incident involving flight BM1822 from Frankfurt at around 11.36am today.

It said all 22 passengers and three crew aboard the Embraer 145 jet disembarked safely via the aircraft steps and no injuries were reported.

Emergency services attended as a precaution.

The airline’s CEO Peter Simpson said: “bmi is aware that many passengers and airlines have seen disruptions to their journeys to and from Bristol Airport today as a result of an incident this morning.

“The investigation into what happened to flight BM1822 after landing is continuing and we are working closely with Bristol Airport and the services to ensure that the airport can return to normal as soon as possible.

“We understand that at Christmas, delays and cancellations can be very distressing for those travelling to see friends and family and we empathise with everyone affected.”

Bristol Airport said it was working to resume operations.

“The runway remains closed while information is gathered to aid investigation of the incident. The aircraft will then need to be towed to a stand and any debris cleared from the runway before flights can resume,” it said.

“While it is too early to speculate about the cause of the incident, we are confident that it was not related to the low visibility conditions currently being experienced.”
