Bomb group warns tourists to avoid Olympics
A left-wing political group has reportedly claimed responsibility for last week’s bombings in Athens – and has warned tourists that they are not welcome in the city for the forthcoming Olympic Games.
According to a report in The Independent newspaper, the group, called Revolutionary Struggle, made the announcement in a letter to the newspaper To Pontiki.
A statement read: “All members representing the international capital, global mercenary killers and state officials, as well as well-off western Olympic tourists planning to be here, they are not welcome.”
As reported, three bombs exploded last week, causing extensive damage but no injuries.
In a separate development, a journalist from The Times reports that she managed to spend two and a half hours inside the “ring of steel” that is the Olympic compound.
Laura Peek even managed to enter the main Olympic arena before being escorted out by a police officer, after waiting for some 50 minutes in a security tunnel under the stadium.
The newspaper reports that, after news of the reporter’s visit was made public in Greece, security was being stepped up with an eight-foot fence being erected.
