A Lufthansa transatlantic flight was diverted to New York due to a ‘credible’ bomb threat, according to reports.

US media said the threat was made to the airline’s head office and prompted the pilot to make an emegency landing at JFK.

Flight 441 had taken off from Houston, Texas, at 8.30pm local time and had been on its way to Frankfurt.

The Airbus A380, which was carrying 505 passengers, was taken to a remote area of the airport where passengers were evacuated and the plane was searched by NYPD bomb squad.

A Lufthansa spokeswoman said: "Flight LH441 from Houston, Texas to Frankfurt was diverted to JFK as a matter of precaution and in coordination with the relevant authorities and the pilot.

"The flight landed safely in New York City at 8.34 pm EST. The 505 passengers disembarked the aircraft and were shuttled to the terminal.

"Lufthansa staff will take care of passengers, arrange an overnight stay at airport hotels and will rebook the passengers to other flights. Safety and security of our passenger, crew and aircraft are always our highest priority."
