Bonanza time for UK tourism
A third of holidaying Brits will choose to spend their time off in the UK, spending an average of £567 over a seven day period, according to new research.
According to a holiday report commissioned by budget accommodation group Travelodge, the number of Brits going abroad this year has dropped from 33% in 2008 to 27% in 2009. They will spend £64 less each than in 2008.
The survey also found that Cornwall was the top destination of choice for UK holidaymakers.Of those who holiday at home, 40% will be taking a seaside holiday – the same as last year – while 24% will be staying in the countryside, up 4% on last year, and 18% will be going to a theme park during their break, up 8%.
Managing director at Travelodge Paul Harvey said: “The summer of 2009 is set to be a big year for the British tourism industry. With the Met Office predicting glorious weather and a majority of holidaymakers looking to stay at home, this year the resorts and destinations of the UK will be jam packed with British tourists.
