Green conscience like nowhere else in the UK results in superb food and hospitality

An online guide to eco Brighton has been launched this week.  The guide has been produced by green holidays website, Greentraveller.co.uk, in collaboration with the city council’s destination marketing body, VisitBrighton . The guide shows visitors how to make the most of the city in a way that has a low environmental impact while having a positive impact on the region’s economy, local communities and surrounding natural landscape.

The Greentraveller’s Guide to Brighton, features over 90 recommendations for where to stay, eat, and what to do in the city, from shopping in the bohemian North Laine – with its eclectic mix of over 300 independent retailers – to the bustling historic centre, city parks, and the open green spaces of the surrounding South Downs National Park.  It includes an interactive map of the featured businesses, upcoming festivals and events, and provides in-depth information on how visitors can reduce their environmental impact by travelling to and around the area by public transport, and by walking or cycling more.

Greentraveller’s team of travel writers have picked out some of the top places to stay, from a B&B and art gallery on Brighton seafront – Artist Residence,  – to art deco styled retreat, Bethany, on the outskirts of the city.

The guide also features the best places to pick up something local to eat – from seafront restaurants serving up fish caught off the Sussex coast, to farmers’ markets selling fresh produce plucked straight from the fields of the surrounding South Downs.

Businesses featured include Terre à Terre – sandwiched between coast and countryside, it’s little surprise that food is big business in the city. Winner of the Brighton Foodie awards several years in a row, this restaurant has become something of a institution in Brighton. Serving up creative, imaginative vegetarian fare, you’ll find things like truffle pea rosti, or twice-baked Sussex sheep’s cheese and rocket oil soufflé with steamed asparagus on the menu – all local and organic. Defintely not just for veggies…

And FARM Café – The food served at this little place comes from their own farm on the outskirts of the city and they have a strong food philosophy focussing on locality, husbandry, sustainability and freshness. Inside, it’s rustic and relaxed, with tables outside for fine weather. Located in the bustling North Laine area of the city, this place makes a great place to stop off for soups, pies and paninis.

The Guide lists, Farm, Arch 139, and The Coal Shed, as some of the best eateries for local produce, and provides details of local foodie markets, festivals and events held throughout the year. There is also a list of family-friendly things to do in the city – from treasure hunts and tours to creative courses, art galleries and museums – as well as historic homes and gardens to visit just outside the city.

Florence Fortnam, Head of Content, greentraveller.co.uk, says: "Brighton has a green conscience like no other city in the UK. Perhaps it’s the city’s location, sandwiched between coast and countryside, which has influenced the local population: they are passionate about conserving the local natural environment, fiercely protective of local, independent trade, and dedicated to safeguarding the region’s agricultural heritage."

"On a recent visit to Brighton, I was struck by the city’s proactive approach to green city living, and we hope that this Greentraveller Guide to Brighton will help visitors and residents alike discover the best of this very special city whilst contributing to the local economy."

Cllr Bowden, Chair of the City’s Economic Development and Culture Committee, says: "Tourism is an essential part of Brighton & Hove’s economy and this online guide will help to highlight our city’s eco credentials to a wider audience. Partnering with Greentraveller – one of the UK’s leading green travel organisations – to develop and deliver the guide also gives validity to the opportunities being presented to potential visitors."
