An elderly British couple were found dead in the pool of their French holiday villa.

The couple, in their 80s, were found by friends who had been invited over for dinner in Gignac, south of France.

The couple were discovered floating’ in the pool.

Police are investigating but have found no evidence yet suggesting foul play

There were no immediate signs of burglary or home invasion.

Autopsies will be carried out.

They suspect it was likely an accident.

“It is not ruled out that one of the spouses witnessed the drowning of the other then came to their aid and sank themselves,” a police source told local media.

Gignac’s mayor said the couple were ‘very nice people’ and visited the town several times a year.
