British Embassy in Cairo shut due to ‘security’
The Foreign Office claims its advice for travel to Egypt remains unchanged despite the closure of the British Embassy in Cairo due to ‘security’.
The Embassy initially closed on Sunday but remains closed today to ‘ensure the security of the embassy and our staff,’ UK ambassador to Egypt John Casson said.
The office of the British Consulate-General in Alexandria is operating as normal.
Ambassador John Casson said: "Public services at the British Embassy are currently suspended.
"It is important that British Nationals know that this step does not affect our general travel advice for British Nationals in Egypt and that British Nationals who need help can still receive consular assistance by calling 0227916000."
"We are working to restore full services as quickly as possible and to keep British Nationals in Egypt and other customers informed."
"I am grateful for the close and ongoing cooperation with the Egyptian government to achieve this."
The travel advice for Egypt says: "There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attacks globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.
"Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Egypt. Attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without prior warning. Foreigners could be targeted in tourist resorts or other locations frequented by foreigners. Previous attacks have almost exclusively targeted the security forces, their facilities and other government buildings. You should take great care near these places."
