British holidaymaker shot dead in Turkey
A gunman has shot dead a British woman and seriously injured two other members of her family who were on holiday in the popular Turkish resort of Dalyan.
Catherine Bury, 56, from North Yorkshire was celebrating her birthday with a poolside party at a luxury villa when the gunman, believed to be a local gardener, burst in.
The gunman, who it is understood had previously argued with the family, also shot Ms Bury’s 24-yer-old son Alex in the leg and her 87-year-old mother Cecille in the back.
Ms Bury reportedly ran upstairs and locked herself in the bathroom but the man blasted off the lock with a pump-action shotgun and shot her dead as she lay on the floor.
Local media reported that the family, who had been holidaying in Dalyan for the past six years, had previously complained to the police about their gardener who had been taken into custody but released over the weekend.
He is said to have handed himself into police following the shootings and was due to appear in court today.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Turkey on September 9.
"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.
"We can confirm the hospitalisation of two British nationals in Turkey on September 9. We are providing consular assistance."
Ms Bury’s mother is believed to have been taken to hospital in Fethiye while her son, who worked in a local hotel in Cleveland Tontine, was taken to Mugla University hospital.
