British skier arrested over death on slopes
United States: Man faces charges after fellow skier died in collision
A British skier has been arrested in the United States after a collision in which another skier died.
Robert Wills, 31, is presently being detained in the US after the incident in the Colorado resort of Breckenridge, and prosecutors are currently deciding whether to press charges.
A spokesman for the local sheriff’s department said that it is still unclear who had right of way at the time of collision, and that it was still to be determined whether either of the two skiers were travelling too fast. Colorado law states that skiers and snowboarders must avoid colliding with people in front or below them on the slope.
While prosecutions for similar offences are rare, a ski lift operator was jailed two years ago because of a skiing accident in which someone died. The man was convicted of criminally negligent homicide after being found to have been skiing too fast for the conditions.
