British snorkeller killed in Cyprus
A British tourist has reportedly been killed after he was hit by a military boat as he snorkelled off the Cypriot resort of Limassol yesterday.
According to the Daily Mail, Carl Wood, 40, was hit by a 20-foot “Rigid Raider” patrol boat during a swimming and snorkelling trip off Lady’s Mile Beach.
The newspaper quotes the man’s partner as saying that he was partially deaf and would not have heard the military boat approaching.
Lynn Wood reportedly said: “Carl went snorkelling around the other side of the boat, away from the shore. He was still near to the boat and then a big green army boat came along at a really fast speed and went over him. They didn’t see him – we were all trying to tell the people on the boat but it was at such a speed.”
Mr Wood was pulled from the water but was dead on arrival at hospital.
The Mail quotes a British official as saying: “I can confirm that an accident occurred within Sovereign Base Area waters off Akrotiri, in which there was a fatality.”
