British student gang-raped in Thailand
A British student has been gang-raped by four men on a balcony in Thailand after being seized as she came out of a bar in the early hours of the morning.
The men had been driving around in a pick-up truck when they spotted the 20-year-old coming out of the popular night spot.
Police said the girl was drunk and had been left by a fellow traveller after both had been advised to leave the bar because of their condition, reports the Daily Mail.
The attackers dragged her to a balcony on the second floor of a neighbouring building, where she was found at 5am in tears.
The victim is believed to be from Scotland and was attacked in the southern provincial capital of Nakorn Sri Thammarat.
The student had only arrived two weeks earlier and was waiting to hear if she had been successful in getting a job she had applied for as a teacher.
The area is not a destination frequented by many tourists as most foreigners travelling there are exploring ‘off the beaten track’ or taking part in a local community programmes such as teaching.
A spokesman for the Tourism Authority of Thailand said: "This is a very sad and awful thing to have happened to the young girl and our thoughts are with her and her family at this difficult time.
"This is not an area that tourists travel to and therefore is a very rare occurrence.
"860,000 British and Irish travel to Thailand each year, the vast majority of which enjoy a trouble free and wonderful holiday. Many tourists are overwhelmed at just how kind and helpful the Thai people really are."
