British tourist found dead on Thai island Koh Tao

Police are investigating the death of a British backpacker on the Thai island of Koh Tao.

Luke Miller, from Newport on the Isle of Wight, was discovered floating in a hotel pool by staff.

According to English-speaking Thai news website Khaosod English, local police believe the 27-year-old died after jumping into the pool from the roof of a nearby DJ booth.

Based on CCTV footage, police believe he hit his head on the pool floor and do not think there was any foul play.

A post mortem is to be carried out.

A fundraising page, set up to raise money to help his family bring his body back to the UK, raised its £5000 target within 15 hours.

Mr Miller had arrived in Thailand just before Christmas for a five-week trip with friends.

Koh Tao was the island where British tourists Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were murdered in 2014.

Burmese bar workers Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were recently found guilty of their murders and have been sentenced to death.

The decision by the Thai court has been met with anger from protesters who believe the pair were subject to torture and may have been wrongly convicted.
