Broadway at the Beach IMAX 3D Theatre opens in Myrtle Beach
The IMAX 3D Theatre at Broadway at the Beach will be the first theater along the Grand Strand to show films in IMAX 3D, the world’s most immersive movie experience.
Located in a 350-acre entertainment complex in the heart of Myrtle Beach, the theatre is six stories tall to accommodate its 60-foot tall and 83-foot wide screen. Inside the IMAX 3D Theatre, visitors will enjoy a totally immersive experience. The 400-seat theater features steeply tiered seating decks so that every person’s view of the screen is unobstructed. Equipped with a Dolby Digital Surround Sound system, the theatre provides more than 12,000-watts of heart-pounding sound.
The screen has a slight curvature that enables the images it carries to fill viewers’ peripheral vision and is painted silver to maximize the amount of light reflected back to the audience. The projection system simultaneously projects two separate images onto the screen – one for the left-eye and another for the right-eye. Each member of the audience must wear special, polarized IMAX 3D glasses which channel the two images so that the viewers’ brains perceive spectacular high-resolution images.
Outside the theatre a 15-foot tall, 200,000 pound sand sculpture of ferocious dinosaurs has been built to celebrate its opening on May 22, 2007. The one-of-a-kind sand sculpture depicts a scene from one of the IMAX 3D films, Dinosaurs 3D: Giants Of Patagonia. The sculpture was built by the award-winning, Florida-based professional sand sculpture company, “Team Sandtastic.”
The five celebrity-narrated IMAX 3D films featured at the new theatre are: Dinosaurs 3D: Giants of Patagonia, Space Station 3D, Sharks 3D, Deep Sea 3D, and Wild Safari 3D.
