‘Brotherly love’ for cruisers
The Port of Philadelphia and Camden has had a fourfold passenger increase since 1998.
This year, about 92,450 passengers in 38 cruise ships are expected.
The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) says at least three of its cruise line members will begin ships at Philadelphia, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International.
Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises will also include Philadelphia as a port of call on select itineraries, according to CLIA.
CLIA says the growth of ports like Philadelphia is a trend with vacationers increasingly more willing to take a cruise if they can find a nearby port.
Almost two-thirds of respondents in a recent poll said the port of origin is the most important consideration when choosing a cruise.
Close-to-home embarkation also saves costs by eliminating air travel. Estimates are a family of four can save up to $1,000 by cruising out of Philadelphia.
