Bubonic Plague alert in Spanish resort
The Spanish resort of Alicante has been put on alert to the risk of bubonic plague spreading from North Africa, after reports of an outbreak in Algeria according to the Daily Mail.
Health chiefs in Alicante have ordered that boats and planes from North Africa be disinfected and checked. They fear the disease, spread by infected fleas from black rats, could reach Europe, which has been plague-free since the 19th century.
Passenger traffic through Alicante last year totalled over seven million, mostly British Holidaymakers heading for Cost Blanca resorts.
