Budget airlines to see further growth
Budget airlines, independent holidays and London hotels will be the growth areas for 2013.
The Tourism Society’s Prospects survey revealed strong optimism for some sectors of the UK travel industry with members predicting growth.
74% of Tourism Society members felt that budget airlines passenger numbers would increase in 2013
In comparison with full service airlines which they thought would see a 41% decrease in numbers.
Independent holidays were thought to be on the rise with 66% of members anticipating an increase while respondents predicted only a 42% increase in package holidays.
Overseas short breaks fared marginally better with 50% increase.
Following the Olympics, Tourism Society members’ thought London hotels would see an increase in occupancies in 2013 but were not so optimistic for the rest of the UK.
They also felt the expansion of regional airports was the best way to deal with Britain’s airport capacity issue.
Tourism Society chairman, David Curtis-Brignell said: "The results of our annual survey have revealed some very interesting views expressed by our members and it will be fascinating to see how these predictions stand up as the year progresses.
"It is particularly encouraging to note the overall level of optimism shown for trading conditions in 2013 which makes a pleasant change from the gloomy outlook forecast in many recent industry surveys."
