Calais closed for second time in a week

Chaos on cross-Channel ferry routes continues today as industrial action by MyFerryLink workers has again closed the Port of Calais, causing operators to cancel all sailings to and from Dover.

It’s the second strike in a week by MFL staff who are angry at the sale of its ferries to rival DFDS. MyFerryLink is due to cease operations on July 2.

Ferry passengers are being advised to contact their operator before heading to Calais or Dover. A Eurotunnel spokesman said trains are still operating normally.

DFDS is still sailing from Dover to Dunkirk and it has put on extra services to accommodate those passengers due to travel to and from Calais.

The operator said passengers due to sail from Calais should head to Dunkirk instead, but it urged all customers to leave extra time to check in due to congestion.

Last week’s strike led to 36 hours of disruption, causing cancellations of ferries and also hitting Eurotunnel’s services.

Workers walked out again yesterday afternoon and MyFerryLinks tweeted that all services would be cancelled until further notice.

P&O Ferries said that due to the industrial action, in which workers have blockaded the French port, it was unable to load or dock its ships at Calais.
