California’s Patrick’s Point State Park renamed
California State Park and Recreation Commission has renamed Patrick’s Point State Park in Humboldt County to Sue-meg State Park after calls by tribal leaders citing its racist history.
It was named after Irish settler Patrick Beegan in the 19th century. Beegan reportedly killed natives including children before fleeing the area although the name stayed. The Commission voted to approve the name change to the original Sue-meg State Park.
It follows similar action to remove racist references at monuments and parks especially since the George Floyd protests in 2020. These include the renaming of the Squaw Valley Ski Resort recently.
