Call for trade to nominate in British Travel Awards

Travel trade nominations have opened for the 2010 British Travel Awards.

Twelve trade awards will be handed out at this year’s ceremony in London on November 4.

The travel industry has until June 16 to put forward nominations, before the predominantly consumer voting begins.

Almost 100,000consumer votes were cast last year for the UK’s favourite travel companies in an awards process verified by Deloitte LLP.

New awards have been introduced this year reflecting holiday trends, such as the popularity of ‘staycation’ domestic holidays and also requests by consumer voters.

The outbound tour operator categories have been broken down into destinations giving smaller operators the opportunity to win an award in the area where they specialise.

Six new awards have been added in the UK holiday category including ‘Best UK Escorted Tours Operator’, ‘Best UK Heritage/Leisure Attraction’ and ‘Best UK Day Out Experience’.

The cruise industry can now enter for the ‘Best Family Cruise Line Award’, an addition created following the 2009 BTA survey of nearly 17,000 consumers which revealed that cruise is now considered a real alternative to the traditional package holiday.

The travel media will also be recognised  with new awards for ‘Best Travel Information Publication’, ‘Best Travel information Programme (TV/Radio)’ and ‘Best Travel Information Supplement’.

Other new awards have been introduced in the ‘Hotels, Resorts and Accommodation’ category, ‘Favourite Destinations and Attractions’ and the ‘Airlines, Airports & Related’ category.

There are 100 consumer voted awards across 12 categories, plus ‘…..Of The Year’ and ‘Environmentally & Socially Responsible’ categories judged by panels of experts and require the submission of an entry criteria form.

BTA chief executive Lorraine Barnes Burton said: “Winning a British Travel Award is recognised by the consumer as a benchmark of excellence and the industry now has the chance to ensure their company is in the running by making a nomination.

“There is no time for complacency or expecting someone else to make the nomination – the trade must react to this call to action because as they say – you have to be in it to win it.”

Go to the BTA website to see the full list of 2010 Awards and also to make a nomination at www.britishtravelwards.com

Criteria forms for the ‘….Of the Year’ and ‘Environmentally & Socially Responsible’ awards will be posted on the website shortly. Companies who wish to go forward in these categories have until August 30 to make submissions.
