Calls to raise awareness of new airport security rules
Almost a third of the British public remain completely unaware of the new rules about "powering up" devices for security screening for flights to the US and other select destinations.
A survey of 680 Brits by Cheapflights.co.uk found 45% of those who are aware of them don’t believe they will "actually make them any safer", and 71% fear it will lead to major delays.
An identical survey of 542 US respondents by sister site Cheapflights.com found awareness in the US was even lower, with only 51% saying they had heard of the new rules.
"Despite widespread coverage, it seems like the authorities and the airline industry still have more work to do to tell people about the new ‘power up rules’ and to clarify them," said cheapflights.co.uk spokesperson Oonagh Shiel.
"We all know security can be stressful but it’s important to be safe, and it’s in everyone’s interests that the travelling public are aware of the new regulations and are clear about them."
The survey comes as some airports confirmed they will be installing extra power points to assist passengers who need to charge their phones and laptops before going through security.
