Canada added to Hawaii pre-testing program
Hawaii will start welcoming Canadians back this winter after Canada became the second international market to get a quarantine exemption.
It will be added to Hawaii’s Safe Travels Program before the year-end allowing Canadians to travel without the need to quarantine in Hawaii.
They must have a negative Covid-19 test result taken within 72 hours of travel.
It is being implemented in partnership with airlines WestJet and Air Canada.
"Beginning in mid-December, Canadians may bypass the quarantine if they take a test from trusted partners," Hawaii Gov. David Ige said.
"The resumption of transpacific travel from Canada will strengthen Hawaii’s gradual economic recovery," said Hawaii Tourism Authority President and CEO John De Fries.
Hawaii recently started welcoming back Japanese travelers under the Safe Travels Program.
Travel restrictions to other parts of the US for Canadians remain in place and they must still quarantine at home after returning from a Hawaii vacation.
"Programs like this that provide viable, effective, and alternative options to blanket quarantine requirements are an important step to safely reopen travel around the world," said Timothy Liu, Managing Director, Sales Planning at Air Canada.
Gov. Ige said talks are taking place with South Korea and Taiwan, which may be added to the Safe Travels Program soon.
