Canada resumes China marketing campaigns

Tuesday, 21 Jan, 2019 0

Although the diplomatic spat continues to rumble on, Canada has resumed marketing activities in China.

Destination Canada confirmed it has ‘resumed regular marketing activities’ said spokesperson Emma Slieker.

"China continues to be our third-largest inbound market, and strategically important to Canada," Slieker told iPolitics.

Canada had hoped to double the number of tourist arrivals by 2021and had enjoyed a mostly successful ‘Year of Canada-China Tourism 2018.’

However that ended badly following the detention of Huawei executive Meng Wanzho, pending extradition to the US.

The marketing agency then halted all new marketing activities.

Two Canadians are being held in China and a third was recently handed a death sentence for drug trafficking.

The US claims Huawei has been bypassing trade sanctions against Iran.

Both countries have warned their citizens of possible detentions for ‘arbitrary’ reasons.
