Car trips boost Canada tourism
Over 9 million US visitors stayed overnight or longer in Canada for the first seven months of 2002 – up 1% over the same period last year.
The figures were boosted by an increase in car trips following recent terrorist attacks that have scared some people off flying.
Air arrivals into Canada from the US were 2.3 million, a decline of 6%, while those arriving by car increased by 6.1%.
Meanwhile, travel by Canadians outside their own country was down by 9.4% to the US and by 6.3% to other destinations during the first seven months of the year.
