Carnival Corp acquiring Alaska scenic railroad
Carnival Corp is taking over the scenic White Pass & Yukon Route railroad in Alaska.
Through subsidiary Holland America Princess Alaska Tours, it is buying the tourist train and railroad, as well as its port and retail operations in Skagway, Alaska, from operator TWC Enterprises Ltd.
The acquisition is worth about $290 million and will complete by July 31.
The White Pass & Yukon attracts thousands of tourists a day each summer on its 110-km route from Skagway to Carcross, Yukon.
"We have a long and valued history in Alaska, and remain very committed to the continued development and success of the entire region as one our most popular destinations," said Stein Kruse, CEO of Holland America Group, adding that Skagway is a favourite with guests and crew members.
The deal also includes port and retail operations at Skagway.
The company also entered into a MoU with Survey Point Holdings, Inc, which will assume management operations of the new business on behalf of Carnival Corp.
Survey Point will become the managing partner of the port and rail operations.
"We are delighted that the Skagway port will continue to be locally owned and independently operated by an Alaskan company," Kruse added.
