Cathay Pacific makes more capacity cuts amid HK travel slump
The sharp decline in passenger traffic on Cathay Pacific has led to more flight suspensions and capacity cuts.
Cathay announced its Dublin route will be suspended from November 7.
The route will then only operate during the summer season next year.
Due in most part to the ongoing protests across Hong Kong, the airline had a disastrous August with inbound passenger traffic to Hong Kong down nearly 40%.
It is also suspending flights to Medan, Indonesia and daytime frequencies to Frankfurt and Paris.
It will also put a freeze on new job hires.
It has already tweaked flight schedules and cut capacity on some long haul routes to the US.
New CEO Augustus Tang Kin-wing says there is a ‘significant softening in advance bookings’ due to the protests and US-China trade war.
The airline’s reputation in mainland China has been hit hard and it could make capacity reductions there in the near future.
Passenger demand on China routes fell more than 28% last month.
