From June 26 to October 21, CDC officials documented 1,359 confirmed cases of passengers and crew.members.

The agency said 49 cases required hospital and 38 needed medical evacuations from ships.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) claims that 600,000 passengers have sailed from US ports. in that time.

The CDC’s conditional sailing order (CSO) runs until January 15, 2022, and will then be downgraded to a voluntary system.

"CDC aims to shift to a voluntary program after this temporary extension expires next year," the CDC said.

"This transition will maintain robust procedures to identify, mitigate, and restrict the spread of Covid, and it will be consistent with other travel orders, such as global contract tracking and global testing orders."

Under the CSO, cruise lines must supply the agency with passengers’ medical records if requested.

More details about the CDC’s voluntary CSO will be published in the coming weeks.
