Celebrity Cruises ship hit by vomiting bug
Celebrity Cruises has given passengers booked on the Summit the option to reschedule their cruise after an outbreak of a gastro-illness onboard.
The ship returned to Bayonne, New Jersey on Saturday morning after more than 300 passengers were struck down by what is believed to be the norovirus.
Celebrity said 311 of the 2,113 passengers onboard and 14 of the 954 crew were affected, but it said they responded well to treatment on the ship.
Celebrity now is working with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to sanitize the ship and the terminal.
The cruise line says any guests wishing to reschedule have been allowed to do so.
The Summit left Cape Liberty in Bayonne on September 21 for a two-week cruise of Canada and New England.
Norovirus can be transmitted from person to person or through contaminated food or water.
Meanwhile, Celebrity announced that its Caribbean Christmas cruises will offer "Finalists at Sea," featuring finalists of past seasons of the popular television show American Idol.
