China has escalated flight cancellations to Japan over ongoing political tensions.
As of this week, all flights on 49 air routes to Japan have been scrapped ahead of the busy Chinese New Year holiday.
The government has been urging citizens not to travel to Japan.
Overall, nearly half of all scheduled flights to Japan have been cancelled this month.
Carriers including Air China, China Eastern and China Southern Airlines have extended their flight refund and change waiver policies through the summer.
Air China stated refunds and flight changes to and from Japan are available through October 24.
Tensions between the countries worsened last year after comments about Taiwan by the Japanese Prime Minister.
China had been Japan’s top tourism source market, with more than seven million Chinese visiting in 2025 through September, generating about $3.7 billion.
It had dropped by almost one-half in December.
