China eases visa rules for Americans
China has relaxed tourist visa rules for US visitors.
It became effective 1 January 2024, with Chinese immigration authorities simplifying the process by cutting the paperwork required.
According to the new procedure, Americans will no longer need to submit their air ticket reservations and hotel booking or invitation letter.
It is the latest move to boost inbound tourism from key source markets.
China recently granted visa-free travel for travellers of several European countries including France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain as well as Malaysia.
Travellers from these countries can visit China for up to 15 days.
It has also inked reciprocal visa-free arrangements with other countries such as Singapore.
China only fully opened its borders for general tourism a year ago and inbound tourism is still only at about 60% of pre-pandemic levels.
