China’s first Legoland Resort officially opened in Shanghai
China first Legoland resort opened its doors in Shanghai on July 5, 2025. Located in Fengjing Town, Jinshan District, the highly anticipated theme park is China’s first Legoland Resort. It is also the largest Legoland park at the time of opening, spanning 318,000 sqm.
The brand-new theme park and hotel destination will invite guests to immerse themselves into eight “lands”, filled with over 75 interactive rides, shows and attractions, as well as explore thousands of Lego models built from more than 85 million Lego bricks. From adrenaline-filled adventures to hands-on play, every corner of the Shanghai Resort creates memories for all.
As part of the grand opening, Legoland Shanghai Resort introduces a range of exclusive attractions designed to deliver world-class entertainment. Guests can step into the spectacular live theatre, where the world premiere of the Lego Monkie Kid live show will take centre stage. At the world-first water-town style boat tour, guests are welcomed to cruise through 25x scale Lego Chinese water town and modern Shanghai cityscapes – all built from the famed Lego bricks. The resort also debuts, the Legoland Creative World, where creativity soars to new heights.

The right investment at the right time
Costing a whopping US$550 million, the Legoland Shanghai Resort is the result of collaboration between Shanghai Jinshan Urban Investment Group, UK-based Merlin Entertainments Group, Denmark’s KIRKBI Invest A/S under KIRKBI Group (Lego Group parent company) and Chinese media and entertainment conglomerate CMC Inc. With its opening, there are now 10 Lego resorts in operation worldwide.
The investment arrives at a time where many foreign companies are cautious about the Chinese market. But perspectives for domestic tourism remain bright. Despite -or thanks to- the slow growth of the Chinese economy in recent years, China domestic tourism market grew by 18.6% in the first quarter compared to last year, according to official statistics.
Many Chinese travelers are in fact encouraged to travel nationally. The government provides effectively subsidies to make travel within the country more affordable. Beijing is also encouraging provincial authorities to widely promote their attractions on social media.
However, while Legoland Shanghai Resort is likely to attract visitors following its opening, it will face tough competition. Shanghai is indeed turning into the new hot destination for theme parks. The Legoland park follows a new “Spider-Man” attraction at Shanghai Disneyland, which opened in May. Warner Bros now looks at opening a Harry Potter park in Shanghai by 2027. Meanwhile, American toy giant Hasbro announced that its giant Peppa Pig park in China financial metropolis is now “in the creative design phase.”
