China to get world’s biggest airport
A new airport being built to serve the Chinese city of Beijing will be “the world’s biggest”, according to its architect. According to the Daily Telegraph, the airport will take three years to build and will be bigger that Heathrow – even after the construction of its fifth terminal, which will double the London hub’s size. The airport’s architect, the UK’s Lord Foster, is quoted as saying: “The scale is truly awesome. Hong Kong’s airport is currently the biggest of its kind, but that will be eclipsed by Beijing.” The newspaper suggests that the planned airport, which is planned to open in 2008, is evidence of the “Chinese obsession with building bigger, faster and higher than any other country”. The Telegraph points out that China is already building the longest bridge in the world, the globe’s biggest dam, and “a contender for the highest building”, in Shanghai.
