Chinese city of Harbin to construct Russian theme park
A Chinese city is to construct a theme park dedicated to Russian culture.
A local tourism leader says the Manchurian city of Harbin has been earmarked for the Sino-Russian Friendship Park, slated to open by 2017.
"The park, based on the history of Harbin City with the theme of Russia culture, will become a new landmark for Sino-Russia cultural tourism," said Wei Minfang, general manager of Harbin Volga Manor Cultural Tourism Ltd.
A five square kilometre site has been selected for the 5 billion Yuan project and construction would begin this year.
Ever since the 18th century, Harbin has had a strong Russian influence and in the past was dubbed ‘Moscow of the East.’
The city still features many buildings with Russian architecture after becoming a safe havene for Russians fleeing the Bolshevik Revolution.
