Chinese cops told to smarten up
BEIJING – – China’s police officers could face the sack if they dye their hair unusual colours, wear jewellery or smoke while on duty as part of a tough new campaign to sharpen up their image.
The ministry of public security has released 19 revised rules aimed at sprucing up the police force image, with others including a ban on women painting finger nails and men growing facial hair.
Limits on the size of men’s and women’s heels have also been put in place. Male officers are not allowed to have shaved heads and hair for females cannot fall below shoulder length.
Officers should also avoid bars and clubs if they are on duty, and they must not wear their caps at a lopsided angle, according to the rules published on the ministry’s website.
Those who repeatedly fail to observe the rules could face the sack, the ministry statement said.
“Minor offenders will be lectured and asked to mend their ways,” the statement said. “Those who repeatedly break the rules or whose behaviour has a detrimental impact could be sacked.”
The move is an attempt to improve the image of policemen in China’s big cities, where they are often seen as arrogant, Xinhua news agency said.
