‘Christmas present’ drone leads to runway closure
A flight was delayed at Heathrow after a drone thought to be a Christmas present was flown over one of its runways.
The departure runway at the airport was closed for seven minutes on Saturday afternoon amid safety concerns.
Domestic drones flown by hobbyists are an increasing concern to aircraft.
In December 2014, a passenger plane had a near miss with a drone as it landed at Heathrow.
In August last year, a drone was seen just 50 metres away from colliding with a passenger plane in a ‘possibly catastrophic’ near miss above London City Airport.
Laws on using drones, which can cost from just £35 to £3,000, mean that they must not fly higher than 400ft and must not be further than 500m away from the pilot.
