Climbers killed in snowstorm at Himalayas base camp
At least seven mountaineers were killed after a severe snowstorm destroyed their camp in the Himalayas.
Two others in the nine-man team are missing feared dead.
It includes a group of five South Korean climbers and four Nepali guides who were at their base camp at Mount Gurja, police said.
"The recovery mission is in progress. The incident happened due to a snowstorm. One helicopter tried to land but couldn’t due to bad weather," police spokesman Sailesh Thapa told the BBC.
Media reported well-known South Korean climber Kim Chang-ho was among the dead.
Organisers of the expedition lost contact with the group on October 7 and raised the alarm.
An initial recovery team found the bodies ‘scattered around the camp.’
Another rescue team planned to recover the bodies on Sunday subject to weather conditions.
The base camp is at a 3,500m altitude (11,483 feet), and about a day’s trek to the nearest village.
Mount Gurja is a little known peak measuring 7,193m which has only been scaled by 30 people, and none for the past two decades.
