Clock-watching Continental sets standard
Continental Airlines was the most punctual of all the US airlines in June with 81.5% of its flights arriving within 15 minutes of their schedule.
US Airways ranked a close second with an 81% punctuality rating and America West was third at 80.3%.
But Alaska Airlines was the worst among the ten reporting carriers, with 74.6% of its flights arriving within 15 minutes of their schedule.
The figures, from the US Transportation Department’s Air Travel Consumer report, also showed the US airlines reduced the number of times they ‘bumped’ passengers off flights in the first half of 2002.
Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines’ reputation for efficient service suffered in June. Although it finished in the middle of the pack for on-time performance, it operated 11 flights that arrived late 80% of the time or more.
A Southwest spokeswoman said several of the flight numbers in the worst five were plagued by security screening delays because they were so full.
