Coach carrying Skibound staff crashes in Alps
One person is reported to have died after a coach carrying 51 staff who had been working for a British ski operator crashed in the French Alps this afternoon.
The staff were on their way back to the UK after finishing their ski season working in various resorts around the French Alps for schools ski specialist Skibound.
Also on board the coach were two drivers for the coach company.
Skibound issued the following statement. "We have been informed that one person has been taken by air ambulance to the local hospital. All other passengers are accounted for and are being treated in local hospitals or have been evacuated to a village close by.
"A special assistance team from Skibound is in place to provide support to those affected by the incident.
"An emergency telephone line has been set up for relatives and friends to call – 01273 244 650.
"Our thoughts are with those who have been involved in the accident and their relatives. The names of any injured parties will not be released until all next of kin have been notified."
It said reports that one person had died had not been confirmed.
The crash happened at 13.45 local time close to the ski resort of Alpe D’Huez, about 65kms from Grenoble.
The BBC said it occurred on a steep mountain road, which has 21 hair pin bends.
It’s the second tragedy for Skibound in Alpe d’Huez. Earlier this year one of its chefs, teenager Lucy Sallis from Bognor Regis, drowned in the resort after going for a late-night swim.
