Colombia LCC Viva Air suspends all flights
Colombian low-cost carrier Viva Air abruptly suspended operations, sparking protests and blockades at airports.
The struggling airline ceased operations due to a delayed merger with Avianca.
Passengers were stranded at airports across Colombia.
Transport Minister Guillermo Reyes said other airlines are working to accommodate Viva’s stranded customers.
The Colombia air regulator has just allowed five other airlines to also bid for Viva Air.
That decision led to Viva suspending all services as it inevitably delays any deal with Avianca.
The other airlines include Aerolineas Argentinas and JetSMART.
LATAM Airlines has also signaled interest in buying Viva Air.
“The CAA’s unprecedented action further delays a decision.”
“Viva is forced to suspend its operations with immediate effect,” it said in a statement.
Viva Air said it will keep negotiating with creditors under an existing restructuring plan.
The proposed Viva – Avianca merger has already experienced several delays.
