Comm Games brings tourists
Key regional destinations in Victoria are reporting an influx of international and interstate tourists following the Commonwealth Games.
Many of the estimated 90,000 visitors to the Games have been visiting the state’s iconic destinations, such as the Great Ocean Road, the Phillip Island penguins and the Yarra Valley.
“We’re getting positive reports from the regions about visitors who have been here for the Games now travelling beyond Melbourne,” Victorian Tourism Minister John Pandazopoulos said.
The Great Ocean Road has reported a 40 percent increase in inquiries by international visitors and day tour companies have reported strong sales to the Great Ocean Road and the Yarra Valley.
Philip Island and Sovereign Hill have also reported an ‘obvious presence’ of tourists associated with the Games.
Mr Pandazopoulos said the Visitor Information Centre in Melbourne’s Federation Square handed out 700,000 tourism maps and brochures during the Games that were being put to good use.
“It is great to see these visitors are now getting out and about to explore more of the state,” he said
