Corsica hit by bomb blasts
French-owned holiday homes targeted following referendum result
There has been a spate of bomb blasts on the French island of Corsica, after its population voted against new political powers.
Following years of campaigning, voters decided they did not want the island to become independent of France or even have its own assembly. Newspapers today report that four French-owned holiday homes were hit by bomb blasts, all of them empty villas in the town of Tiuccia, south of the capital Ajaccio.
Commentators say the “no” vote was particularly influenced by the fact that nearly half of Corsicans work in publicly-funded jobs, and it is generally accepted that while tourism brings in plenty of cash for the island, it is not enough to support its economy alone.
Politicians had already warned that the referendum result would lead to an increase in violence on the island – and there have already been more than 100 bomb attacks in Corsica this year alone.
