Costa Cruises has named two new sister ships Costa Favolosa and Costa Fascinosa.
The 16th and 17th ships in the fleet are due for delivery in summer 2011 and spring 2012 respectively.
They are part of major fleet expansion programme involving five new ships set for delivery between 2009 and 2012 costing around 2.4 billion euros.
The 3,780-passenger vessels will complete the expansion programme, which saw Costa Luminosa enter service in May, Costa Pacifica in June and Costa Deliziosa at the end of January 2010.
More than 40,000 travel agents in more than 40 countries submitted a total of 16,000 different pairs of names, as part of s “Send us a sea of names” project.
The initiative saw travel agents, customers and web users all over the world taking part in a search for the names of the two new Costa Cruises flagships.
A shortlist of 25 pairs of names was posted at www.worldofcosta.com and all visitors to the website were invited to choose their favourite pairing. More than 42,000 preferences were expressed.
The names chosen reflect the way that those who took part see Costa’s ships as “magical” and “glamorous” places.
Costa Favolosa is intended to be the epitome of ship interior design, interpreting the excitement and emotion of people who view the cruise as a magical voyage in a “contemporary enchanted castle”, according to the Italian company.
Costa Fascinosa is designed to express “that unique glamour of a cruise ship” and its “capacity to evoke strong emotion and passion”.
