Costa Rica braced for first hurricane in 174 years
Costa Rica is lying in the path of a hurricane that is expected to make landfall on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day in the US.
Tropical Storm Otto is already near hurricane strength in the Caribbean Sea and it is feared it will bring heavy rain flooding and mudslides when it reaches central America.
It is likely to hit either Costa Rica or Nicaragua in an extremely rate late November hurricane landfall.
The UK Foreign Office has warned visitors to monitor its progress via the National Hurricane Center and to follow local advice.
If Otto does reach Costa Rica, it will be the first time the country has been hit by a hurricane in 174 years of record-keeping.
The Foreign Office is also warning other countries including Honduras and Panama could be affected by Otto later this week.
