Cruise Discounts being washed away?

Sunday, 28 Sep, 2004 0

With travel rebounding, some cruise lines are changing pricing policies to regain control.

The move is aimed particularly at discount brokers buying cabin blocks and sharing a portion of commissions with customers, according to The New York Times.

Carnival Cruise Lines in August announced that starting 1 January, any travel agency that advertised rates not approved by the cruise line might receive a reduced commission or even be banned from selling its cruises.

The policy applied only to Carnival, and not to other brands it owns such as Holland America.

Royal Caribbean International, which also owns Celebrity Cruises, warned travel agents of reduced commissions or non-support if cruises were sold for non-published price.

“We do not want a situation whereby any particular agency, for whatever reason, would be able to advertise a lower price for any sailing,” company president Jack L. Williams told The Times.
